Building a Healthy Sense of Self: Essential Knowledge for African People
William HT Bailey

When two people have different religious beliefs, is it possible that one is right and the other is wrong?

How can two people have profoundly conflicting opinions on issues like the O. J. Simpson verdict and affirmative action?

Understanding the principles that give rise to these phenomena is crucial for African people! Building a Healthy Sense of Self: Essential Knowledge for African People uncovers mysteries behind questions such as these. It presents concise explanations for how two people can witness or experience the same event, yet form different interpretations. It explains how to maintain your sense of self when your rational perceptions differ from those of society's controlling group.

EXCERPT

Africans coming into consciousness are reintroducing critical thinking into our spirituality-where spirituality reflects a way of being that spurs us to pursue growth-enhancing achievements. A clear examination of history and an appreciation of human behavior show that we have been taught to embrace someone else's narrative and worldview and to denounce our own. Human behavior insights, in concert with ancient wisdom, tell us that (1) thoughts inform behavior and (2) unconscious thoughts are profoundly influenced by subliminal messages regarding one's phenotype and heritage. Those at the forefront of this thought revolution seek to employ these insights by promoting a narrative that fosters personal and community growth, and which synchronizes rather than conflicts with knowledge from history, archeology, anthropology and geology. A tangible sign of the success of our psychological and cultural reconstruction will be the realization of an African economic force. Due to the resistance of those whose sense of self and career are invested in the current school of thought, it could take several generations to effect the eventual paradigm shift. So we today are struggling for the benefit of future generations.

COMMENTS

"'An understanding of human behavior is essential to the well-being of African people.' As a psychologist I heartedly agree. For more than 20 years, I've utilized the subconscious to affect behavioral change. Using the hypnotic techniques of direct and indirect suggestion, and Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP), I have been very aware of the principles that William Bailey identifies. Moreover, having applied non-cognitive factors and facilitated academic development among university students to promote scholarship, I have first-hand knowledge that Bill's perceptions are indeed accurate."
